Get the Look: A Beach Chic Room by Carrier and Company

Hi everyone! Arianna here, back with more decor inspiration. For this month's Get the Look I'm featuring this beautiful living room from the Long Island home of Catherine Marron (previously Senior Features Editor at Vogue) designed by Carrier and Company.

 This space exudes a sense of casual elegance that is very inviting and reminds me a bit of the set of one of my favorite movies, Something's Gotta Give. Achieve a similar fresh Hamptons beach house look with these pieces:

Jet Set: Hotel Marignan Paris

http://www.pierreyovanovitch.com/
Hello LDV readers! Brendan here of (BAD) Blog About Design. For this Jet Set post I decided to take us to the city of love, Paris. The Hotel Marignan is located in the eight arrondissement of Paris on a quite street. The 40 room, 10 suite hotel, features a bar, restaurant, and private screening room. Designer, Pierre Yovanovitch transformed the interiors of the hotel into what he describes, "New French Style". (ABOVE) The outdoor terrace has a perfect view of the Eiffel Tower. The hotel's location is very convenient, close to shopping, and near the heart of the Champs Elysees. The rich colored floors, boxwoods, and simple furnishings really give this terrace a special look. (BELOW 1) The lobby has a very retro look. I love the floors, and simplicity in the furnishings. The minimal amount of furniture makes the space feel larger, and also allows one to admire each piece. (BELOW 2) The bar is very minimal as well. Punches of red are found in what is otherwise a very neutral space. (BELOW 3) The restaurant plays with the subtle color theme. At the restaurant, one can sit in the morning and enjoy a complimentary breakfast. I really like the light fixtures, as well as the yellow arm chairs. The booth seating is awesome. (BELOW 4) I like how the simplicity of the hotel carries into the rooms. At the end of a long day in such a busy city, I want to come home to a space that doesn't make my brain spin in circles. The lighting on opposite sides of the bed is pretty interesting! What do you think of the hotel? Have you been here before?

Fabulous Room Friday 07.26.13

fab room2

This week’s “Fabulous Room” has been on my radar for a little while. I had originally pinned the image above because I loved the idea of a pedestal table stacked with artfully arranged piles of books as well as the clean lines and overall simplicity of the space. I recently stumbled upon an additional image of the room and was so excited to get a better feel for the overall space. It turns out, this East Hampton home was recently featured in Traditional Home.

fab room The room features extraordinary millwork and mouldings. Because the architecture is so strong, I love that designer, Larry Laslo has opted to keep the palette neutral and to use modern furniture with clean lines. When you have a ton of mouldings to work with, I totally believe that you should either go very bold with saturated color or keep everything crisp and neutral—anything in between would not be nearly as striking.  Everything is arranged with perfect symmetry and the overall tone is classic and masculine. What’s not to love?

Have a wonderful weekend!

Help Me Pick a New Chandelier!

image In true designer form, as soon as I finished decorating my house to have it photographed for my website and the SMP Living feature, I was itching to start over again! I have already identified several things within my home that I am ready to update. I am usually very decisive when making decisions for clients, but this has proven to be much more difficult when picking things out for myself, at least when it comes to certain pieces. Case in point: the Extra Large Hicks Pendant from Circa Lighting that hangs over my breakfast table. It’s a bold, statement-making piece and while I still love it, it’s become so popular, that I think I may be ready to give something else a try. What do you think?

image

{I have also toyed with the idea of replacing our simple wood table with a white marble-topped Eero Saarinen Tulip Table. I was this close to ordering it but it wouldn’t have made it in time for the shoot and it’s been on the back burner ever since.}

{View from Family Room towards Breakfast Room}

I have narrowed it down to two options:

image

{Option 1: I have loved this Choros Chandelier by Barry Goralnick since it was introduced last year. The contrast of the Aged Iron and Antique Brass is beautiful while the shape is so organic and really makes a statement.}

image

{Option 2: I also love the elegant simplicity and clean, open lines of the Darlana Lantern in Gilded Iron. It is a chic piece that lends itself beautifully to any style space.}

Please help me choose! Should I go for one of these options or stick with the Hicks?

Modern Style Icon: Olivia Palermo

Modern Style Icon: Olivia Palermo via La Dolce Vita

Olivia Palermo has really sky rocketed to Style Icon status over the past couple of years in spite of her negative portrayal on MTV’s “The City”. But after all, none of us can really know how real reality TV actually is. There is no denying that Olivia is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to style. She veers towards the classic, but always adds a special, unique touch, making each ensemble memorable. Olivia can accessorize like it’s her job—an in a sense, I suppose it has become her job.

Olivia is at every important fashion event, she has the best in fashion at her fingertips and she possesses an uncanny knack for mixing high and low. Whether she’s sitting in the front row at a fashion show or spending a weekend with Mr. Valentino, Gianncarlo Giammetti, and her handsome and equally stylish boyfriend, Johannes Huebel, Olivia always looks amazing. Olivia always manages to look polished, glamorous, and chic, yet she maintains an effortless air about herself, at least when it comes to her fabulous wardrobe. Her style is perfection and she is truly a “Modern Style Icon”.

Modern Style Icon: Olivia Palermo via La Dolce Vita {You’ll notice that overall, Olivia sticks to classic silhouettes that she puts her own spin on through her jewelry, shoes, and bags. My wardrobe isn’t a tenth as good as hers, but I stick to the same philosophy of sticking with some basic pieces, such as this shirt dress and adding personal style through accessories.}

Black + White is Always Right

image {There are few things I love as much as a white house with black shutters.}
I don’t think I will ever tire of black and white. There isn’t anything more basic or beautiful to me than a well-done composition of black and white whether it is in fashion or decor. As much as I love to embrace color, sometimes it just feels good to get back to basics and nowhere does this ring more true than in beautiful architecture. I dream of one day owning a beautiful white brick house with black shutters. Timeless, elegant, and classic, black and white is always right!
